ニューヨークに住むソフィは、婚約者ヴィクターとともにプレ・ハネムーンとしてイタリアのヴェローナを訪れる。ヴェローナには『ロミオとジュリエット』のジュリエットの生家と言われる家があり、恋の悩みを綴ったジュリエット宛ての手紙が、世界中から年5000通も届いていた。
ジュリエットの家を訪れたソフィは、壁一面の“ジュリエット・レター”に目を見張る。
やがて、カゴを手にした女性が、手紙を集めて去ってゆくと、好奇心に駆られたソフィはその後を追う。
そこでは“ジュリエットの秘書”と呼ばれる女性たちが集めた手紙に返事を書いていた。
